ORDINANCE NO. 84-41
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA, ADOPTING INCREASE
IN SALARY FOR MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY ORDAIN AS
FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Costa Mesa hereby finds .and
declares as follows:
1. The salary to be paid to City Council Members is governed by
California Government Code Section 36516 and for a City with a population
between 75,000 and 150,000, the base salary is $300.00 per month.
2. Pursuant to California Goverment Code Section 36516.2, the City
Council may authorize an ,increase in the base salary by an amount not to
exceed five percent (5%) for each calendar year from the operative date of
the last salary adjustment.
3. The last salary adjustment for the City Council became effective
on December 1, 1982, with a salary of $382.88 per month.
4. The City Council on September 27, 1983, determined to increase its
salary for the next ensuing year by five percent (5%).
5. The City Council now wishes to increase its salary for the five
percent (5%) permissible for the current year.
ACCORDINGLY, Section 2-21 of Title 2, Chapter II, is hereby amended to
read as follows:
SECTION 2. '
"Section 2-21. Salaries.
Each member of the Council shall be paid a salary of $300.00 per
month for serving on the Council until the beginning of a new
term of office by any incumbent or newly elected member of the
Council following the 1974 Municipal Election. Commencing at the
beginning of any such new term of office, each of the five (5)
members of the Council shall be paid a salary of $347.29 per month
for serving on the Council beginning for the month of May, 1974;
said salary shall be increased five percent (5%), to $364.65 per
month, beginning for the month of May, 1975; said salary shall be
increased five percent (5%), to $382.88 per month, beginning for
the month of December, 1982; and said salary shall be increased 10
percent (10%), to $421.17 per month, beginning for the month of
December, 1984.”
SECTION 3. This Ordinance shall take effect and be in full force
thirty (30) days from and after the passage thereof, and prior to the
expiration of fifteen (15) days from its passage shall be published once in
the ORANGE COAST DAILY PILOT, a newspaper of general circulation, printed
and published in the City of Costa Mesa or, in the alternative, the City
Clerk may cause to be published a summary of this Ordinance and a certified
copy of the text of this Ordinance shall be posted in the office of the
City Clerk five (5) days prior to the date of adoption of this Ordinance,
and within fifteen (15) days after adoption, the City Clerk shall cause to
be published the aforementioned summary and shall post in the office of
the City Clerk a certified copy of this Ordinance together with the names
of the members of the City Council voting for and against the same.

1984, and thereafter passed and adopted as a whole at a regular meeting of
said City Council held on the 15th day of October, 1984, by the following
