M„ at the Justice Court Building on West 18th St., Costa Mesa, California® Present: Councilmen Miller, Nelson, Smith and T, --;Winkle'. Absent: Councilman Martini. Officials Present: City Clerk Swartz, City Attorney Dungan. Absent Treasurer Ries. - PETITION ON City Clerk Swartz read a petition presented by OIL DRILLING I. Ce Thompson requestin8 that the City Council consider the amen&—ient of Ordinance no. 14, so as to: permit drilling and production of oil in an area South ;of West 19th Street and West of Anaheim and Superior Streets, Costa Mesa, California, The. petition was ordered filed with the City Clerk and the City Attorney was instructed to examine the signatures and make a report, CITY SEAL Councilman Smith moved that the revised design for the City Seal submitted by LB W. Pierce be approved. Councilman Miller seconded the motion. and it was carried -by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Miller, Nelson, Smith and TeWinkle. NOES: None. Absent:CoLmeilman Martin. COMMITTEE ON Councilman Miller reported that there was a possibility S'T'REETS AND that the County would pay for one additional guard at HIGHWAYS the Everett Rea School. Councilman Miller mored that the City Clerk 1drite the Orange County Board of Super- visors requesting them to furnish and pay for school crossing guards for the coming year. Councilman Smith seconded the motion and was carried by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Miller, Nelson, Smith and TeWinkle NOES: None. Absent: Councilman Martin. ORAL Mr. R. D. Flaherty, president of the Chamber of COMMUNICATION Commerce informed the City Council that a committee on taxation and fiscal matters has been formed to study the city's financial problems. LAND USE Councilman Miller made a motion to grant permission to VARIANCES Marie A. Noonan to operate a Beauty Shop at her res- idence at 1619 Hamilton Street, Costa Mesa, on the terms and. conditions set forth by the Orange County Planning Corrmiission in their recommendation report. Councilman Nelson seconded the motion and it was carried by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Miller, Nelson, Smith and TeWinkle. NOES: None. Absent: Councilman Martin. Councilman Miller made a motion to grant permission to C. P. Jackson to use a house trailer for a dwelling at 1906 Pomona Street, Costa Mesa, on the terms and conditions set forth in the Orange County Planning A. Ca Swartz, City C ark City ,of Costa Mesa 1 1 1 Conmiission report, Coup_cilma.n Smith seconded the motion and it was carried by the following vote: AYES: Councilman Miller, Nelson, Smith and TeWinkle NOES: None. Absent: Councilman Martin. :RESOLUTION Mayor TeWinkle stated that the City Council had NO. 9. interviewed and studied all,applicants for the APPOINTMENT OF position pf City Manager. Councilman Nelson moved CITY KANAGF,R that a resolution be adopted "APPOINTING GEORGE W. COFFEY, CITY MANAGER FOR: THE CITY OF COSTA MESA". Councilman SrAith seconded the motion and it was carried by the following Grote: AYES: Councilmen Miller, Nelson, Smith and TeWinkle, NOES,: None. Absent:. Councilman Martin ADSOUR114ENT Councilman Miller moved that adjournment of the City Council to August 3rd, 1953,, at 7:30 P. M. The motion was seconded by Councilman_Smith and carried by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Miller, Nelson, Smith and TeWinkle. NOES: None Absent: Councilman Martin. - A.
