HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/20/1954 - City CouncilMINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL .CITY OF -COSTA MESA April 20, . 1954 The City Council of the City of Costa Mesa, California, met in adjourned regular session, 12:00 noon, April 20, 1954, at the Justice Court Building, 567 West 18th Street. The meeting was called to order by Mayor TeWinkle, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and invocation by Rev. McShain. ROLL CALL Present: Councilmen Martin, Miller, Nelson, RESOLUTION It was moved by Councilman Nelson that this Council NO. 55 adopt a resolution thanking Mr. Miller for his Miller untiring efforts and sincere devotion to the welfare of the City. The motion was seconded by Council -man Martin and unanimously carried. OATH OF Clerk Swartz administered the oath of office to the OFFICE following elected councilmen: Charles TeWinkle Claire M. Nelson Smith and TeWinkle. Bertrum I. Smith Bruce Martin Absent: None ELECTION OF Clerk Swartz, acting as chairman, announced that the Officials selection of a mayor was now in order. AS MAYOR Present: City Manager Coffey, City Attorney Dungan, Councilman TeWinkle nominated Claire M. Nelson for City Clerk Swartz. the office of Mayor. The nomination was seconded by Councilman Martin. There being no further CANVASS After the opening and counting of the Absentee Votes, elected Mayor. Councilman Nelson accepted the ELECTION the Council canvassed the returns of the General 4-13-54 Municipal Election held on April 13, 1954. Mayor Nelson suggested the advisability of appointing Mayor Pro a Mayor Pro Tempore at this time. It was moved by Tem RESOLUTION Thereupon Resolution No. p 54, a resolution f1RECITING and carried that Bruce Martin be appointed Mayor NO. 54 THE FACTS OF THE ELECTION OF APRIL 13, 1954" was Results of read. It was moved by Councilman Martin that Election Resolution No. 54 be adopted. The motion was 4-13-54 seconded by Councilman Smith and carried by the following vote: AYES: Councilmen Martin, Miller, Nelson, Smith and TeWinkle NOES: None Mayor TeWinkle expressed to Mr. Walter Miller the appreciation of the Council and the citizens of Costa Mesa for his work and valuable services to the City during his term as Councilman. As a token of appreciation the Mayor presented Mr. Miller with a Councilmants Badge for his personal use. RESOLUTION It was moved by Councilman Nelson that this Council NO. 55 adopt a resolution thanking Mr. Miller for his Miller untiring efforts and sincere devotion to the welfare of the City. The motion was seconded by Council -man Martin and unanimously carried. OATH OF Clerk Swartz administered the oath of office to the OFFICE following elected councilmen: Charles TeWinkle Claire M. Nelson Bertrum I. Smith Bruce Martin Alvin L. Pinkley ELECTION OF Clerk Swartz, acting as chairman, announced that the CLAIRE NELSON selection of a mayor was now in order. AS MAYOR Councilman TeWinkle nominated Claire M. Nelson for the office of Mayor. The nomination was seconded by Councilman Martin. There being no further nominations, Claire M. Nelson was unanimously elected Mayor. Councilman Nelson accepted the position of Mayor and thanked the Council for the honor bestowed upon him.. MARTIN Mayor Nelson suggested the advisability of appointing Mayor Pro a Mayor Pro Tempore at this time. It was moved by Tem Councilman TeWinkle, seconded by Councilman Pinkley and carried that Bruce Martin be appointed Mayor __ Pro Tempore. CITY CLERK Upon motion of Councilman Smith, seconded by Councilman Pinkley and unanimously carried, A. C. Swartz was reappointed City Clerk. CITY Upon motion of Councilman TeWinkle, seconded by TREASURER Councilman Martin and unanimously carried, W. C. Reis was reappointed City Treasurer. CITY Upon motion of Councilman Smith, seconded by ATTORNEY Councilman Martin, and unanimously carried, Donald Dungan was reappointed City Attorney. There being no further business,on motion of Councilmen Martin, seconded by Councilman Pinkley, the meeting adjourned to Monday April 26, 1954, at 7:30 p.m. Claire M. Nelson, Mayor A. C.
