CITY OF COSTA MESA.
April 15, 1958
The City Council of the City of Costa Mesa, California, met in adjou_rmd
regular session at 8:00 p.m., April 15, 1958 at the City Hall, 695 W.
19th .`Street, Costa Mesa.- The meeting was called to ruder by the Mayor
folloned by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and Invocation by
Councilman John, Smith.
ROLL CALL Councilmen Present: J.anith, B.Smith, Pinkley, Meyers, Nelson
Councilmen Absent: None
Officials Present: Chief Deputy City ,Clerks City --Clerk, City Manager
City Attorney, City.Digineer
Mayor Nelson expressed his appreciation to_his `fellow,Cq_uncilmen, City
Staff, and the Citizens for the fig _cooperation shown -,him during his
term in office.
CANVASS OF ELECTION This being the time and place fixed for the canvass ofthe returns of
RETURNS the General Municipal Election held on April 8, 1958-, ,tile returns of
said election, and the absentee votes cast, at- .said -_election that had
been received, were duly and regularly canvassed-as'provi.ded by law.
It was moved by Councilman Pinkley, seconded by Councilman J.Smith,
that Resolution No. 462 being A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF COSTA MESA RECITING THE FACTS OF THE GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION
HELD IN SAID CITY ON THE EIGHTH DAY OF APRIL, 1958, be adopted, and that
the statement of results be set forth in full in the minutes:

The whole number of votes cast in the City of Costa Mesa was 4810.
The names of the persons voted for, and the number of votes given
at each precinct to each person' were as follows:

The Deputy City Clerk announced that Arthur H. Meyers and Everett A.
Rea had been duly elected as Councilmen for the City of Costa Mesa,
and informed the Council that `Statements d' Campaign 'Expenditures
had been filed as required by law.
The City Clerk administered the oath of office to Mr. Meyers and
Mr. Rea, who then took their seats on the Council.

MAYOR ELECTED The City Clerk then acted as chairman for the organizational meeting.,
John W, Smith and announced that the nominations were now open for the office of
Mayor.
Thereupon Councilman B.Smith nominated John W. Smith for the office
of Mayor. The nomination was seconded by Councilman Meyers. There
being no further nominations, it was moved by Councilman Pinkley,
seconded by Councilman Be�9nith, that nominations be closed, and
Councilman John W. Smith, was unanimously elected Mayor.
Thereupon Mayor John Smith took his Chair as Mayor and conducted the
meeting. Mayor Smith presented Ex -Mayor Nels-on with a gift from the
City Family for his service rendered to the citizens of Costa Mesa.
RESOLUTION NO.463 Upon motion by Councilman B®Smith, seconded by Councilman Pinkley,
Claire M.'Nelson Resolution No. 163, expressing a thank you to Claire M. Nelson for
his service.to the City of Costa Mesa, was adopted by the following
roll call vote:
AYIS; Councilmen B.•Smith, Pinkley, Meyers, Rea, J. Smith
NOES: Councilmen _ None
ABSENT: Councilmen None
(MAYOR PRO -TEMPORE The Mayor announced that nominations were now open for the office of
ELECTED Mayor Pro -Tempore. .
Bertren I, Smith Thereupon Councilman Pinkley nominated Bertren I. Smith, for the
office of Mayor Pro' -Tempore. The nomination was seconded by -Council-
man Meyers. There being no further nominations, it was moved by Council-
man Pinkley, seconded by Councilman Meyers, that nominations be. closed,
and Councilman Bertren I. Smith was unanimously elected Mayor,Pro-Tempore.
Appointment -of Upon motion by Councilman Pinkley, seconded by Councilman Meyers, and
City Clerk unanimously carried A. C. Swartz, was reappointed as City Clerk.
Appointment of Upon motion by Councilman B.�Snith, seconded by Councilman Meyers, and
City Attorney unanimously carried, L,, Donald Dungan, was reappointed as City. Attorney.
Appointment of Upon motion by Councilman Meyers., -seconded by Councilman Pinkley, and
City Treasurer unanimously carried W. C. Ries, was xmppointed as City Treasurer.
Ltrerett A. Rea Councilman Everett A. Rea asked permission to leave the state. Upon
permission to motion by Councilman B.Smith, seconded by Conneilman Meyers, and carried
leave State Mr. Rea.was given permission to leave the state.
Adjournment Upon motion by Councilman Pinkley, seconded by Councilman Meyers, and
carried, the meeting adjourned at 8;30 p.m.
