BACKGROUND: 1-405 Freeway offramp at Susan Street was completed and open to the public in November 2007. The name for the west leg of the intersection at 1-405 Freeway offramp and Susan Street (Attachment 2), leading to IKEA was left blank at that time. The City had received requests from IKEA, as well as C. J. Segerstrom & Sons, requesting that the name of the west leg be designated as "IKEA Way." The reason for this request is to provide guidance to motorists as well as emergency personnel as they approach the intersection. ANALYSIS: As the intersection of 1-405 Freeway offramp at Susan Street is within the jurisdiction of the State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), staff requested authorization to incorporate the "IKEA Way" name on the blank street name panel. Caltrans provided a permit for the sign installation with an approval letter from the Director of Public Services and the street name sign was installed. Caltrans is now requesting that a resolution by City Council authorizing the "IKEA Way" street name sign be provided in order to comply with their standing policies in accordance with the State of California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) Section 2D.34. Staff recommends that the City Council approve the attached resolution authorizing the "IKEA Way" street name sign at the intersection of 1-405 Freeway offramp and Susan Street. ALTERNATIVES CONSIDERED: One alternative would be to not approve the attached resolution. This will result in the removal of the "IKEA Way" street name sign. FISCAL REVIEW: The City was reimbursed for the full cost of fabrication and installation of the "IKEA Way" street name sign. LEGAL REVIEW: The City Attorney has reviewed and approved the attached resolution as to form. CONCLUSION: City Council approval is recommended for formally designating the west leg of 1-405 Freeway offramp- Susan Street intersection, as "IKEA Way." This request for the "IKEA Way" name was received from adjacent property owners. As the intersection is within Caltrans' jurisdiction, the proposed name designation requires confirmation through a City Council resolution. Staff supports the "IKEA Way" name and requests City Council approval of the attached resolution.
