Indicate why you wish to serve on this Commission/Committee/Board: City of Costa Mesa 77 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626 For several years I have been concerned about the "not so stellar" reputation that the Senior Center has with some of the seniors and others in the community. I believe that this can be changed by having a more sensitive and respectful board. I also believe that the finances of the center should be completely transparent. For example, for several years I made donations to the Senior Center. I stopped making these contributions when I could not get anyone to return my telephone calls. They did not even know what I was calling about, but could not be bothered to return my calls. I believe that this attitude can be changed by having some new people on the board. 1 have been involved with the City for numerous years. We have worked diligently to improve the City and I have always kept an eye on the financial aspects of their decisions. 1 am a member of the Orange County Taxpayers Association and a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee for OCTA, and a member of the bicycle ad hoc committee for OCTA. I own my own business. Part of my business relates to assisting not-for-profit entities in preparing the Federal 990 forms and budget preparation. I have a BS degree in Accounting and an MBA. I believe I could be helpful in making the financial transactions more transparent and relate that to the public. 2623-18 rev. 1/09 Page 1 of 2 9; (Over) rh 2. Indicate why you wish to serve on this Commission/Committee/Board: i City of Costa Mesa 77 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626 For over a year and a half, I have been attending the meetings of the Costa Mesa Senior Center's Board of Directors, both the total Board and the Executive Board. I would like to continue to do so, but with the ability to actively participate in the discussion of matters brought to the Board instead of just as a guest with only three minutes of input. In addition to attending the Board meetings, I have also been attending the Senior Advisory Committee meetings and the meetings of the ad hoc Task Force formed to complete a new agreement with the City of Costa Mesa. Further, I have been an active member of other senior centers, including Newport Beach, Irvine, and Huntington Beach. This broad range of experience at other centers would be helpful to creatively meet the needs and open opportunities for the members of the Costa Mesa Senior Center. This participation in all these meetings, plus being an active volunteer in the Costa Mesa Senior Center Travel Group, gives me a unique background and insight into the needs and opportunities for growth that are available to the Center. I would be an open minded and fair member of the Board, keeping in perspective the interests of the seniors as well as the other citizens of the city of Costa Mesa . Jul 6'1 PIS 3 2. In my business experience, every proposal I wrote resulted in a contract for the company. I am skilled in building consensus for successful collaborative efforts. Ordinarily, this would be a great thing, but it has not been getting the "good press" that I would like to see the Senior Center receive, and by reflection our City. Living only blocks from the Senior Center since its inception gives me a unique perspective on the Senior Center's clients, as many of them are my neighbors. On a personal level, I have been the primary caretaker for all of the senior members of my own family, and have extensive experience in the geriatric .field and eldercare. It is true that the "Golden Years" are not for sissies. Our elderly population have incredible reserves of strength and resilience, but with the aging process come health concerns and loss of family and friends. This can, and is, an emotionally fragile and lonely time for many of our aging community members. They need a unique kind of care and understanding. So what is/are the cause(o) of the Senior Center's problems of late? To quote Paul Newman. in Cool F -land Luke, "I think what we got here is a failure to communicate". I think it is time to really listen to one another and not continue to 'talk at', complainn and gripe about the improvements both seniors and the staff would like to see happen. On the side of the staff, I think they feel unappreciated for their hard work, and that leads to poor morale. On the side of the Seniors, they want to be heard and not treated like children. The biggest problem that I have personally observed is that any "question" that a member or non-member addresses to staff or Board members is (often) perceived as an "attack". A question is not an attack, it is just a question. For the past year and a half I have attended all of the Senior Center (7:30 am) Board meetings, all of the Executive Committee Boards -meetings, all of the City of Costa Mesa Senior Center Task Force Mtgs, and most of the SAC meetings. This background certainly helps bring me 'up -to -speed" for the position of a working Board member. I live and work in Costa Mesa. My business has been in the same location for 32 years. It is a unique business in that we manufacture unusual items and also provide services to a broad range of clients. Every job we take is a 'one -of -a -kind', and requires a high degree,of problem solving and creativity, and every customer has different expectations. Because of my particular skill set I have extreme Page 1 of 2 (over) = JL 6 110 Pm 3.40 flexibility and have found during 32 years of business management that not all jobs are driven by the "bottom line". If chosen to serve I look forward to being a positive and contributing member of the Senior Center Board of Directors. 2.
