Please see the attached letter from a Costa Mesa business owner requesting that City
Council consider an additional revision to the City's Sign Code to allow the replacement
of non -conforming freestanding pole signs with a sign of similar height provided certain
conditions are met.
This code revision would be considered as part of "Item C" of the staff report which
proposes that freestanding sign standards be revised to eliminate signs on a single
pole. This proposal would allow the overall nonconforming height to be the same
provided that the sign is modified to eliminate the exposed single pole.

Dear Kimberly -
Allow me to offer a solution to some of the signage goals of the city based on a recent experience at our
new FIAT store. I am having trouble upgrading my sign without losing the total height I currently have
(25'). In order to try and do so I need to go through a planned sign program, time, money, etc... not
very business friendly so I'll just end up leaving my sign the way it is and we both loose as does the
consumer trying to locate a business and the overall city look and feel. Since I understand it is a goal of
the city overtime to have businesses upgrade their signage to a "totem" look I have a suggestion: If a
business will agree to update their signage to the look the city wants (totem), the business won't lose its
existing height and it will be done over the counter, affordable, quick, and easy.
