Subject: Fireworks - Proposed Ordinance for City of Costa Mesa
The proposed fireworks ordinance (see attached) provides a clear example of the disrespect the voting majority
of city council has for the residents of the city of Costa Mesa.
The proposal to extend the time period (7/1-7/4) that fireworks can be discharged in our city is detrimental to
the residents of the city of Costa Mesa for the following reasons:
1. Costly for public safety– overtime costs (higher costs for city)- see attachment for detailed list of adverse
impact on the city
3. Bad for the pets of our city (loud sounds cause stress to our dogs and cats)—also potential outsource of
Animal control will result in lost animals will being sent to the county shelter
4. Bad air quality, many residents have no air-conditioning and have to open windows to get cool air in their
homes. (Sulfur is thick in the air on 4th of July)
5. Bad elements come to Costa Mesa to discharge fireworks. Now we have less police officers.
6. Dirty streets.
7. More traffic
8. Cars parked outside get covered in soot from fireworks.
Why should we have to leave our city during the 4th of July to get away from the bad air quality and chaos in the
streets? Now you are proposing to have thick smoke for days on end. The 4th of July is Independence Day (one
day) not several .
Please do not extend the period of time that fireworks can be discharged in our city.
