PURPOSE: The Cultural Arts Committee works with City Council to support cultural arts programs and to bring art awareness to the residents of Costa Mesa, The City of the Arts. This Committee works to establish programs, events and information that help residents access the arts in many different venues, and through multiple sources. MEE'rING SCHEDULE: The Committee meets on the 06 Thursday of the month at 6:45 p.m. MISSION STATEMENT The purpose of the Cultural Arts Committee is to enhance, promote and support our rich artistic community of Costa Mesa, the City of the Arts. 2011 GOALS/OBJECTIVES: 1. Implement and maintain an Artist and Gallery Association City Website Web page (located on Cultural Arts Committee City Webpage) ® Directory of Costa Mesa Artists (Free Membership- includes artist name; art media; email address and website info) ® Networking opportunities for Costa Mesa Artists (meet & greet mixers at CM galleries) ® Directory map of Costa Mesa Galleries and event advertisement ® Networking opportunities for Costa Mesa Gallery owners (meet & greet mixers at CM galleries) 2. Continue to obtain Sponsorship donations 3. Implement "Food and Art" related event 4. Create a Sub -Committee to oversee displayed art in the City Hall Youth Art Gallery 5. Conduct 2 Juried Artist Showcases and Art in the Park Incorporate Performing Art at each Artist Showcase Provide a Art Broker to sell Art at Artist Showcases Integrate local businesses and galleries involvement in each Artist Showcase and Art in the Park 6. To obtain measurable achievements (i.e. surveys) 7. Staff Liaison continues to monitor and promote upcoming Committee and CM Gallery/Artist events on Facebook page. LONG TERM 1. Permanent Art Gallery to display art work of Costa Mesa artists 2. Provide City Council with advice relative to issues relating to Cultural Arts 2010 ACCOMPLISHMENT 1) Artist Showcase ® Artist Showcase XIII was held at Whittier Law School (3333 Harbor Blvd) on Saturday, March 13 from 6-10pm. All art was juried and 40 artists exhibited juried selected piece(s) (72 pieces shown) of art. A featured artist was selected to use their art piece as the graphics for the flyer and allowed to display all three submitted pieces. Mesa Art and Engard Arts displayed pieces. The venue and water were donated. eVocal entertainment was utilized. Over 300 people visited the showcase. Over 300 artists are emailed on upcoming Artist Showcases Fifteen new artists were selected to show art pieces. 2) Sponsorship program was approved by the Community Foundation to assist in offsetting future events and projects cost. Brochure was designed and distributed. 3). Provide four "Art in the Park" events during the Summer Concerts in the Park series. Donated face painting, craft supplies and paints for each of the four concerts. Mesa Art donated 4 four x four display boards for participants to paint; design was created by SOY participants. Hurley donated T -Shirts for participants to purchase for $5 to paint; $470 was raised. 4) Cultural Arts Committee Facebook page promoted Vanguard University Theatre and Arts & Learning Conservatory productions, Engard Arts and Mesa Arts openings, Art in the Park and Artist Showcase XIII. 5). Throughout my life I have had a passion for the arts, and as the executive director of The All-American Boys Chorus I have the opportunity to work at something that I love to do. Costa Mesa is the cultural center of Orange County; with the marvelous Orange County Performing Arts Center and South Coast Repertory theaters in our midst. As the City of the Arts it is important for Costa Mesa to cultivate and engender a love for the arts among our own citizenry, especially young people. This goal is best accomplished by increasing awareness of, accessibility to, and participation in the performing and visual arts across a broad spectrum of programs, venues and events at the local level. I have worked on the development of the AABC's :Music Outreach program, which we have implemented localh- and throughout the United States on over 25 concert tours and which has involved over 35.000 children since 1995. 1 served on a committee that was jointly put together by the Western Fairs Association and the California Arts Council to explore ways to bring more of the arts into county fairs throughout the state as a means of increasing public awareness of the arts. 1 studied piano for 12 years and played in the National Guild of Music Teachers piano adjudications for 8 years as well as the Certificate of Merit program. I also currently am the piano accompanist for The All-American Boys Chorus on tour. The mission for this committee touches close to my heart establishing a Youth Gallery in City Hall and maintaining a directory of local artists. I am a Costa Mesa resident who is a full-time artist working at the Irvine Fine Arts Center as contract an instructor, teaching art to all ages (Grades Pre -K- 12 and adults). I am also a resident artist for the Costa Mesa High School's ceramics program. In addition, I am currently enrolled in the California State University, Long Beach teaching credentialing program for Single Subject in Art to become a high school art teacher. I also participated in the Community Development' art program for low-income families as art instructor as a way of contributing back to the community that I treasure and live in. My experiences as public and private school teacher and as instructor for various organizations put me at the heart of youth education. My daily contact with students and parents keeps my reality in check and provides me an accurate perspective of their educational goals and needs. I teach all ages and have a great affection for my students; however, I have decided to teach high school students long-term because I know it is such a difficult age. There is much help needed in guiding and mentoring these students. The Youth Gallery at the City Hall would be an opportunity to affirm our city's youth who have shown artistic talent and potential and to assist them in growing their dreams of becoming an artist. To our local artists, this organization offers support through cultural arts programsand brin s art - awareness to local residents and businesses. I would like to advance and continue my participation in the art community of Costa Mesa via the Cultural Arts Committee and its agenda. As an artist, art and museum studies student, and recognized public historian, I feel that I can bring a fresh eye to the Committee, an eye aimed at both reinforcing and expanding Costa Mesa's current art community, and broadcasting that community to the rest of the world. An end result of more global attention to our art community could be more visitation and dollars earned for the City and the City's art community. Regarding my interested in bringing the Arts of Costa Mesa to an international stage of recognition, I feel that I am in a unique position to facilitate this as the Assistant Director of the Costa Mesa, CA — Wyndham, Victoria, Australia Sister City Education Exchange Program. I recently returned from the Exchange trip with seven outstanding Estancia High School students. Extraordinary works of art were witnessed, from Australian Aboriginal paintings in a museum to student art to the modern painted Laneways of Melbourne. Like Costa Mesa, Wyndham not only produces its own artists, but is adjacent to a major city with even more to offer. It seems natural that a country with one of the oldest painting traditions in the world should partner in artistic exchange and awareness with our Costa Mesa, The City of the Arts. I would like to bring new ideas, explore and participate in the ongoing activities of the Committee, and inject my enthusiasm for Cultural Arts into the community. I feel lucky and want to help others feel good. At the age of 52, I was diagnosed as severely disabled. I refused to be ill and worked for a few years to get myself in shape. It was a long, hard road but I had gifts of accomplishment every day no matter how small. I started working out at the gym, but I had no knowledge of what to do other than ride a bike or walk. I decided to take a Yoga class at Orange Coast College and that changed my life again overnight. I wanted everyone to experience a stretching class or Yoga which led me to Pilates and that was the start of my second career. I enrolled in a Pilates school and studied and practiced for two years to obtain my first Pilates Certification. By then, I was feeling better, more secure and confident. In 2000, I opened up my first Pilates business on Balboa Island and started working with seniors. Two years later my daughter joined the business and we opened up a second studio, Balboa Pilates on the Peninsula. . I have worked with seniors, both men and women and a have relationship with the Newport Beach Plaza putting on demonstrations and helping them with their questions and concerns. I also work with the physical fitness, social director at the Plaza on a volunteer basis. I also participate in lectures at the Plaza. Over one year ago I sold my studio on Balboa Island and kept the studio on the Peninsula. This was to free up some time to study Redcord Active, a physical fitness, scientifically proven suspension program from Norway. My daughter and I are now both certified in Redcord Active and work directly with The Neurac Institute in Princeton, New Jersey and Redcord in Norway. I have videos of seniors in Norway working with the Redcord ropes, slings and handles and I will refer to links at the end of this proposal to give a deeper perspective and understanding of the neuromuscular revolution. I love to work and I love people. I get more satisfaction out of helping people and educating them about their bodies and how they move and why it is important to strive for good posture, and if I had my way, posture would be the main topic of health in the schools. With good posture and mind to body understanding, you can be pain free. I know from firsthand experience. I have worked with physical therapists for many hours over the past few years to learn more and make sure I have the knowledge to help people and never have them do something not correct for their body.. I know when it is time to suggest a physical therapist and many seniors do well with a compassionate, understanding teacher or therapist. -2— October 2, 2011 I can teach a Redcord Actiive or Pilate's class on the mat, floor and equipment for any age at any level and/or private lessons. I can also be a consultant to seniors and help them figure out what program or exercise regimen is best for their individual needs. I have over 25 years of business experience. I love marketing, computers and internet research; and anything that comes up in everyday life regarding challenges. I believe making important decisions can be handled with compassion and common sense. I do believe in change, fun, excitement and motivating people to, encourage them to want to feel good. When people experience improvement, even the slightest, it gives them incentive and courage to move forward. Prior to my attending the meetings, the Board of Directors did not comply with the Brown Act and refused to allow tape recordings of their board meetings nor did they allow the seniors to see the budgets, or any other documents. The agendas and minutes were not posted seventy two hours prior or readable from outside the building. I still have to pursue Brown Act violations. Both Executive Director Ms. Aviva Goelman and Program Director Mr. Darryl Kim have a lengthy list of things the Senior Center members are not allowed to ask about, or comment, on such as wanting to know the actual number of GSstaff hours" on site. Aviva and Darryl are not always at the center during the 9 to 5 daylight hours when the seniors are using the facility. "Staff Pay" is another question that the board members should know. Also, seniors would like to know why it takes months to get a (popular) program or activity implemented. Even without their inalienable First Amendment rights, our seniors have the right to question or comment on anything that occurs at the Senior Center; in addition to these rights, this is a City owned building funded primarily by City taxpayers and the council needs to be aware of how this property is being run. Last, but certainly not least, the Board of Directors is often not in compliance with their own By - Laws. Certainly the many and varied theatrical and musical performances presented at the Orange County Performing Arts Center and South Coast Repertory Theater are equal or superior to those offered at most comparable venues anywhere in the country. We have a thriving local music scene that has fostered a number of papular musicians and bands that have gone on to seek wider acclaim atter having played local venues, such as the Detroit Bar or Avalon. In response to the current economic climate, we as individuals, families, neighbors, businesses owners, cities, and states are all looking to best utilize resources available and make the mostefficient choices_ I want to become more involved with the City of Costa Mesa to continue to guide the path of revitalizing neighborhoods and providing families with the ability to maintain a clean, healthy and safe environment. I believe through City support and working with committee groups we can also show owners and renters in the area how they also can work with these programs to improve their current condition. Being a active member of the Urban Land Institute for five years has given me experience in finding the best land use practices _around the world and bringing them to every community that we arc involved in shaping. I want to continue to work with the committees to give them better information on how housing is changing from generation to generation and to help allocate resources to provide an improved living experience in Costa Mesa for this generation and the next. In Costa Mesa, like most of Orange County, we have been redesigning the fabric of building practices to create a better and more sustainable world for the next generation. I have attended the program for the Leadership for Planned Communities and Urban Infill which brought together the top industry leaders for home builder, architects, engineers, and goverment officials to share ideas about new innovation that can provide more affordable housing within any community. Funding sources are available in energy sectors that can allow home owners and apartment owners grants and below market rate loans to upgradebuildings for weather protection and energy efficiency. With the fast -paced changes of redevelopment agencies and other state sources I feel this is a very critical time to make sure that our local cities are aware of other HUD programs that will be more necessary to continue scheduled projects and maintained growth of a healthy affordable housing stock. While working at an affordable housing development company I found that my greatest satisfaction came after the housing project was complete and I was able to meet the new residents of the community. After graduation from California State University, Fullerton with a Business degree in Real Estate and Land Institute, I was able to devote full time to this pursuit by building relationships with city officials and a larger network of contractors throughout California. During this time I was responsible for projects from conception to completion and was a liaison to coordinate due diligence, budgets, and attain financing and necessary project approvals with city planning and redevelopment agencies. Being on the front lines in Acquisitions, the changes in the economy were morepronounced than in other areas and the ability to obtain financing and market prices to continue building new apartment complexes became difficult to near - impossible for the niche. From this transition, I was inspired to research retail businesses that had the ability to be absentee owned and could thrive in any economy. After finding a leased space that had previously operated as a laundromat before closing for over a year after a fire, I completely redesigned the interior and enhanced the store's image to re -open the location with technology upgrades to efficiently manage and operate the store remotely, thus restoring local services back: to the community. In addition to the laundromat, I am the President and Co-founder of Quest Preservation. Founded in 2008, Quest was based on the principle that adding or maintaining value to any asset is a top priority. As a licensed general contractor, Quest focuses on maintaining and preserving default assets and working with local brokers on REO propertyrepairs and value -add items. We now also complete tenant improvement and emergency repairs for property managers. In Quest Preservation's second full year of business we were able to complete over 14,000 work orders and projects for banks and asset management companies across nine states. In line with my professional interests, l am the President and Charting member of the Real Estate and Entrepreneur Alumni Association at CSUF. Now a 100 member organization, we focus on sharing knowledge through personal experiences and how to help navigate local graduates with job placement and mentorship. Through the Urban Land Institute I am on a Tactical Advisory Panel that helps non -profits achieve their expansion and growth goals for the next 5-10 years of their development. We help outline and troubleshoot all areas of development with experts for each receptive field of the building industry.
