As a Costa Mega resident for the past seven yews, I have learned to appreciate the many
opportunities the city provides for involvement with the arts. Certainly the many and
varied theatrical and musical performances presented at the Orange County Performing .
Arts Center and South Coast Repertory Theater are equal or superior to those offered at
most comparable venues anywhere in the country. We have a thriving local music scene
that has fostered a number of popular musicians wW bands that have gone on to seek
wider acclaim after having played local venues, such as the Detroit Bar or Avalon.
Continuing attention to the encouragement of art in public places is a natural extension of
the flourishing presence of an, which Cosh Mesa already enjoys, and I would welcome
the chance to participate in a program aimed at raising awareness and heightening
appreciation of related activities sponsored by the city.

PhD, Social Work, Occupational Stress of Popular Musicians
Dissertation topic: An Exploratory Stady of Popular Musicians' Occupational Stress,
Cognitive Appraisals, and Coping Styles.
Personally interviewed approximately 200 popular local and international musicians. In
its use here, the phrase "popular musicians" omits orchestral and classical musicians, as
research studies have been carried out on these populations and by the nature of their
business, these genres are considerably different from popular musicians. Developed and
validated the Musicians' Occupational Stress Scale (MOSS) to obtain statistical
information, Blended quantitative data with qualitative findings gathered through
interviews in one of the first studies to flesh out the picture of popular musicians today.

My interest in serving.on this Housing Committee is to continue to be active in the within the community and serve in a
position where my .expertise will assist the Commission and Council in making the most appropriate decisions .with the
-resources available to create sustainable, thriving neighborhoods.
IInresponse to the current economic.climate, we as individuals, families, neighbors, businesses owners; cities, and states
are all: looking wbest utilize resources available and make the mosl:efficient choices. I want to become more involved
with the City of Costa :Mesa to continue to guide the path of revitalizing neighborhoods and providing families with the
ability to maintain a clean, healthy: and safe: environment. I want to be.apart of the•group helping bring the perspectives
of renters, home: owners and neighbor committees into an atmosphere that can provide and strengthen. the existing the
programs.in.place andprovide new ideas and perspectives to reach the common goal of revitalization.
Nero .programs are frequently created by HUD; some are exclusive for public or -non-profit entities, however, many other
programs are underutilized. Programs exist for apartment owners., businesses and home owners and the City of Costa
Mesa, and I want to make available recipients awareahat these programs exist and they are eligible to apply. These
programs mostly target the same areas that, generally overlap with AMI requirements, RDA and HUD target zones.1.
believe through City support.and working -,vith committee groupsme can also show owners and renters in the area how
they also can work with these programs to .improve their current. condition.
Being a active member of the Urban Land Institute for five years has given me experience in finding the best land use
practices around the world and bringing them to every community that we are involved in shaping. I want to continue to
work with the committees to give.them better information on how housing is changing from generation.to generalion and
to help allocate resources to,provide an improved Jiving experience in Costa Mesa for this generation.and the next. In
Costa Mesa, like most of Orange County, we have been redesigning the fabric of building practices to create abetter and
more sustainable world for the next.generation. I have. attended the program for the Leadership for Planned Communities
and Urban Infill which brought together the top industry leaders for, home builder, architects, engineers, and government
officials to share ideas about new innovation that can provide more affordable.housntg within any community. Funding
sources are available in energy sectors that-can.ailow home owners and apartment owners grants and below market rate
loans to upgrade buildings for weather protection and.energy efficiency.
With the fast -paced changes of redevelopment agencies and other state sources I feel this is a very critical time to make
sure that our local cities are aware of other HUD programs that will be more necessary, to continue scheduled projects and
maintained growth of a healthy affordable housing stock.
Wiuile working at. an affordable housing development company I found that my greatest satisfaction came after.the
housing project was complete andI was.able.to .meet the new residents of the community. The new residents often would
r
share stories aboul. previous living conditions and it gave me pride to seethe improvements made and due rl r"' e

Mr. Merritt,
I have received your late application for a committee appointment. On your
application you indicated that you are applying for the "housing CDBG". Since we
don't have a committee by that name I need to clarify what committee you want to
submit your application for. I have attached a copy of our most recent press release
on the committee recruitment.. Please review and let me know which committee you
want to apply for appointment as soon as you can as the City Council will receive the
submitted applications very soon.
