City Council Members,
I am writing this letter to thank you for your ongoing support of youth sports in our community through
the fireworks sales program, as well as your decision to extend the fireworks sales window that has allowed for
additional revenues to be generated for youth sports in our community and schools.
As you know, we continue to face an unprecedented and unpredictable fiscal environment in public
education, forcing us to make difficult decisions that have adversely affected co -curricular programs and youth
sports. Your support of this integral revenue stream and the extension of the sales window helps to keep our
sports programs successful.
The city council's support of fireworks program has a broad and lasting positive impact on our
community -- beyond dollars and cents. The research on the relationship between children and sports is
unassailable: School and community sports activities allow our youth to learn lessons through participation in
activities that contribute to the development of life skills like being a team player, effectively communicating
with others, understanding the importance of values like sacrifice and commitment, and working towards a
common goal. Studies also clearly show that involvement in co -curricular activities and sports contributes to the
development of more mature, responsible and academically oriented students.
In the past 20 years I have served as a high school coach, a community sports coach and a school
administrator that currently oversees 21 athletic programs serving the students and constituent families of Costa
Mesa High School and Costa Mesa Middle School. I am hard pressed to recall during that time a city program
as successful as the Costa Mesa's fireworks program. Thank you again, your support is irreplaceable.
Sincerely,
Phil D'Agostino, Ed.D.
