I have had the pleasure of working In Costa Mesa since 1981 and living in Costa Mesa since 1995. Throughout my life I have had a passion for the arts, and as the executive director of The All-American Boys Chorus I have the opportunity to put that passion to work for the benefit of our choristers and also for the benefit of our community. Costa Mesa is the cultural center of Orange County; with the marvelous Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts, South Coast Repertory Theater, and many outstanding galleries and studios in our midst. As the "City of the Arts" it is important for Costa Mesa to continue to cultivate and foster a love for the arts among our citizens, and especially our youth. This goal is best accomplished by increasing awareness of, accessibility to, and participation In the performing and visual arts via a broad spectrum of programs and events at the local level. I greatly enjoy being a member of the Cultural Arts Committee, and I would be honored to continue working on further developing the many arts -related programs already in place in Costa Mesa, and also work with the other members of the committee to explore and create new avenues and methods of bringing the arts to more residents of Costa Mesa, In 33 years as the business manager and then executive director of The All-American Boys Chorus I have developed, produced and directed many events related to the performing arts (concerts, tours, camps, festivals), as well as helped in collaborations with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Orange County Women's Chorus, Paciflc Chorale, Orange County Symphony, Orange County Fair and the OC Fair Youth Expo, Arts Orange County, the Festival of Children and the Orange County Department of Education. I helped develop the AABC's Music Outreach educational programs, which we have implemented locally and throughout the United States on over 28 concert tours and which have served over 40,000 children since 1995. 1 was appointed to a committee that was jointly created by the Western Fairs Association and the California Arts Council to explore ways to bring more of the arts into county fairs throughout California as a means of increasing public awareness of the arts. I belong to the Western Arts Alliance and to the networking alliance called the Orange County Music and Arts Administrators. I studied piano for 12 years and played 1n the National Guild of Music Teachers piano adjudications for 8 years as well as the Certificate of Merit program. I am also currently one of the accompanists for the The All-American Boys Chorus, Page 1 of 2 ***To submit form via email, please save application, %II in, and click on the submit button at the bottom of this page. Henry James wrote, "It is art that makes life..." My life is punctuated with an appreciation for arts (plural). What constitutes art began early for me, in a family with music and art as important and necessary parts of life. My education from early elementary grades through four years of college has used artistic media - drawing, painting, sculpure, literature, film - as means to educate and experience humanities and sciences. Regular attendance at symphonies, plays, films, art galleries and museums keep me informed about how the arts inform lives today. As an elementary teacher for nineyears, art In all its forms was part of tile curriculum. With the (lame "City of the Arts," 1 believe Costa Mesa has a responsibility to inform and direct its residents to as many forms of art as it can post or practice. To that end, 1 believe in having available copies of an inventory of the city©s owned "arts," celebrating them with shows and/or performance, and commissioning new art with budgeted funding. I was lucky to grow up in a part of the United States where the Founding and the Revolutionary War were very important. People there were careful to preserve the History for future generations. I like to think that I have done my part to help preserve the History of the places where I have lived. Time goes by so quickly that the present turns into the past before we know it. I have been able, through the committee, to participate in placing the Indigenous People of Costa Mesa sign at the Railroad Station, signing Broadway as the first paved street in Costa Mesa, working to designate the site of the WWII Santa Ana Army Air Base, and most importantly to me as a retired High School Social Sciences Teacher, helping to update the Costa Mesa Coloring Book. I have enjoyed working with and learning from many people in Costa Mesa. I have made many lasting friendships. Having served on several boards, committees, working groups and collaboratives throughout my career, I feel that I am quite familiar with the workload required of such a voluntary position. At this time, I feel that my professional and family obligations will allow me sufficient time to dedicate to serving Costa Mesa. I have been a resident of Costa Mesa for over 10 years, I have a young daughter (2.5 years old) and, for the past 5 years, I have owned and operated a small business, Ersoylu Consulting, here in the City of Costa Mesa as well. Professionally, my expertise is in community and social programs. My firm consults dozens of organizations and cities on planning and measuring the impact of their community services and programs. I have served on grant review boards/ committees for St Joseph Community Partnership Fund, for First 5 Los Angeles and for Orange County Nutrition & Physical Activity. I currently serve on the St. Joseph Health System Community Partnership Fund Board, am Chair of The Grain Project Board (a local nonprofit) and have, in the past, served on the Santa Ana Federal Empowerment Zone Board. My professional background is in community health, and, as such, I am most interested in serving on the Housing & Public Services Grants Committee. In addition to having taught Nonprofit Organizations, Public Policy, Urban Politics and American Government at CSULB, Chapman and UCI, I have had the pleasure of giving several guest lectures to the UCI Masters in Urban Planning students over the years about how to create, implement, and measure successful community based programs. Topically, in addition to expertise in health and education programming, I have also written successful grants for CSBG funds for transitional housing programs (for LB CAP) and consulted on several violence -prevention projects. Therefore, if there is another committee that city staff believes my skills would be better suited, I am open to other options. Please see my attached resume for more information on past work. I am looking forward to hearing back from you. I had inquired about 3 years ago to an open position on the Parks Commission, but never heard back from any of the Council members or city staff. So, I hope that this time, perhaps, :here is a way that I can become more engaged in the community where I live, work and spend most )f my family time. The senior center is a highly valued part of our community. I have submitted applications in the past for this position but was not appointed, however my interest in serving on the Board has not waned. I believe there is room for improvement on this Board in the form of creating/updating a Strategic Plan and implementing policies and procedures as well as identifying regular reports necessary for the Board to have measurable results and govern effectively and efficiently. The Board needs to identify the strategy and the staff has to implement the tactics to reach our goals. As current President of the Board of Directors at Mesa Water District I believe I have a lot of knowledge on how a Board should operate effectively and efficiently. I am quite confident that there are policies and procedures at Mesa Water that translate well for the Costa Mesa Senior Center Board of Directors. I am also a current LAFCO Commissioner where I have gained valuable knowledge of financial trend analysis and early warning signals concerning finances. I believe this knowledge helps to ensure the Costa Mesa Senior Corp. remains a valuable, viable, and ongoing entity. In addition to being on the Board at Mesa Water I also currently serve on the Board for the Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries. In prior years I have served as a Planning Commissioner and Parks and Recreation Commissioner for the City of Costa Mesa. Currently serving on the Finance Advisory Committee for the City of Costa Mesa. Thank You for your consideration of my application. I moved into Costa Mesa in 1966. With the exception of a two year stay in Iowa, I have been here ever since. I lived on the west side for fourteen years and moved into the Mesa Verde neighborhood for the last 30 years. I have been a wife, a mother and now a widow. I have been a stay at home mom, an owner of a dry cleaners, a Real Estate Agent and then for the convience to my family I went to work for the Newport Mesa Unified School district in 1985. 1 retired in 2012 only to return in 2013 for a 6 month assignment. I enjoyed my 27 1/2 years and am very proud to have worked for the NMUSD. I started as a secretary for a short time then advanced to the attendance office at TeWinkle than moved over to Costa Mesa high School. For the fourteen in the attendance office I kept the daily count, completed the daily, monthly and annual attendance reports for the district to be reported to the state. All my files were audited annually and I responded when necessary to any findings. I communicated with students, staff, counselors, social services and law enforcement regularly. From that position I advanced to the accounting position at Corona del Mar High School activities office. I collected, receipted, deposited and reported all monies collected. Money came from such sources as donations, fees, clubs, sporting events, the theater, class activities and fundraisers. I prepared all site financial reports ( income statement, balance sheet, etc.) Each year my records were audited by an out side auditoring firm and I responded to any and all findings. From that position I moved to the district office for my last 4 years with the district. I worked in the budget department of fiscal services. I worked the 5000 accounts, donated funds. Any money that came from the sites or designated for the district from a donation source came across my desk. I did the deposits, budgeting and maintance of these accounts. I have gone through training for school attendace keeping, school financial accounting, computor programs and CIF. I have set on numerous personnel interview panels for both NMUSD and other school distrists. I now volunteer at the front desk of the Costa Mesa Senior Center one half day a week. I hope to contribute my professional experiences along with my love and caring for our seniors to help provide a safe and enjoyable setting that enriches their daily lives. I care for our seniors and feel they deserve all that we can give for the contributions that they have given in their life time. I have been involved in Senior Housing for the last five years opening a company for Aging in Place in order to assist seniors in researching options available to them for their housing needs. Seniors have a special place in my heart and my work with them has compelled me into completing a certificate with USC Andros School of Gerontology for Home Modifications and the National Association of Homebuilders as a Certified Age in Place Specialist. I am also in the process of launching a non profit company that will work with a variety of groups that will enable seniors to stay in their homes for as long as they desire. This passion began when I was young, living with my Grandmother and Great Grandmother where I was able to see first hand what experience and knowledge our older citizens have. It was further developed in the early 2000s when I was able to assist in taking care of six of my older relatives over a five year span where it became obvious to me that our culture has done a great disservice to our Elders. Becoming part of our City's Senior Center will enable me to assist in this very important endeavor for our community. I will be submitting my resume as well. As a 23 year City resident I have had the pleasure and reward of serving on two committees, 3R and Charter, and found both to be very rewarding. 3R was dis-banded, and Charter is coming to a conclusion and I still wish to serve. I run a small business and produce and analyze financial statements monthly. If allowed to serve I look forward to careful monthly review of Center financials and to being part of budget review process. I also believe that fundraising is important and would be a part of any such efforts. My hope is that with assistance from the board the Center can return to financial stability and continue to serve the senior community in Costa Mesa. Page 1 of 2
