I've lived in Costa Mesa for 26 years and wish to serve on the Finance Advisory Committee because I'd like to continue contributing my time and effort to building a strong future for Costa Mesa. Over the last year and a half I've become well informed on issues facing our City, as well as more involved by attending City Council, Commission, Committee and other community meetings. Through this involvement, as well as serving on the Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee, I solidified my passion for participation, as well as joy in contributing my skills and experience to the discussions and work at hand, A sound investment strategy is essential for Costa Mesa's future success. My education at the University of California honed my analytical skills and my work experience as a financial analyst at an investment bank will be useful in reviewing financial statements and assessing investment strategies. Also, my work as Director of Development for the Newport Beach Film Festival honed my leadership, listening, and collaboration skills necessary for working well in a group situation. I am hard working, data oriented and motivated to positively contribute my knowledge, skills and time. I've closely followed the work of the Finance Advisory Committee by attending several meetings, reviewing agendas and reports including the OC LAFCO 2013 Fiscal Trend Report, business license tax information packet, and agenda report considering potential new revenue sources. To better understand Costa Mesa's financial workings as well as financial challenges, I've also read through the CAFRs for the last three years, and attended Pension Oversight Committee meetings. In broader strokes, I study both national and global economic trends, one US example being the effect of quantitative easing (and subsequent tapering) on market performance. Since the financial health of Costa Mesa doesn't only depend on revenue and good investments, but also prudent spending habits, I've examined all available warrants for 2013, broken down expenditures by category, and prepared an analysis that I intend to compare to previous years. To best serve residents, members of the Finance Advisory Committee should represent, as best as possible, Costa Mesa diversity and demographics. To that end I represent a female, mid -thirties contingent. I would like to serve on the Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committe, because I am interested in making sure that Fairview Park is the best park that it can be. I hike 4 -miles in Fairview Park almost every morning before work with my two pups for the past several years. I really do enjoy the people that I run into durning my early morning hikes, it is usually the same group of people, not a lot of hikers out there at 5:30 am. I would like to help those people have a voice on what goes on in the park, even if it©-- just a small voice. I have been volunteering in the outdoor community for years, helping build and maintain trails, picking up trash and giving tours. I even have a hiking blog, where I review hikes in and around Orange County. You can find my blog at; www.ca-hiking.com V N N t1J . Page 1 of 2 page. I have spoke at City Council meetings against putting in a parking lot in the lowlands that would ruin the last open space where tranquility can be found. I am a 30 year old energy engineer living in Costa Mesa. I've lived here for two years, just long enough to fall in love with this city and its eclectic mix of mom and pop shops, high end retailers, families and businesses. After serving in the US Navy and moving around for most of my life, I have finally found a place that I would like to call home. I would be honored to serve on the Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee. I have not lived here long enough to hold some of the biases that I've read too much about. Nor have I lived here long enough to have my judgment clouded by long standing rivalries and misunderstandings. But I have lived here long enough to know that Costa Mesans deserve a fair say in how our open spaces are used. I am a Costa Mesa resident, living within walking distance of Fairview Park and my children attend the local Waldorf School. As a family, we enjoy and participate in the many facets of Fairview Park - exploring the natural beauty, flying the model planes and riding the trains. We have made many friends from the park community. have no vested interests and as a non US -Citizen have no political affiliations. Very simply, I have some time available to look after the Park for my children and future generations. I have served on the Walford School board for 3 years, have a PhD and am an executive in a local semiconductor company. CA 92626 One of the main reasons I invested in the City of Costa Mesa and the Westside over twenty years ago, was because of it's incredible parks. The close proximity of such accessible natural parks surrounding my home is a unique and valuable feature rarely seen anymore in Orange County. Over the last half century growing up in Orange County, as the son of a farmer, I've witnessed the changes over my lifetime, that have drastically altered the landscape. When I discovered Canyon and Fairview Parks, I was reminded of the areas that we used to take for granted forty years ago. I bought my home because I wanted my children to have those same vistas, views, and open spaces that I enjoyed while growing up. I have always been a strong advocate for not just the Westside of Costa Mesa, but the entire City, and the preservation of it's many attributes. I've served on three PTA Boards, local S.I.TE. councils, local sports groups, and was honored to be President of a Youth Arts Organization. I've served and supported our local Churches for almost two decades. I serve as a Board member for the non-partisan Orange County League of Conservation Voters , a local advocacy group dedicated to protecting the environment, and securing sustainable and green governance. I'm a Founding Charter Member of the Orange County Fairgrounds Preservation Society, dedicated to ensure our local Fairgrounds remain in the Public Commons for generations to come. I have followed many of the meetings of the Fairview Park Advisory Committee, either through attendance or through online publications reporting the progress. I have read the staff reports. I understand the myriad of issues currently facing the Park and I'm aware of the many concerns. I have studied the Archeological history, and read the papers from Dr. Koerper (SRS field supervisor). I've attended the Ancestral Walk Ceremonies and consulted with the local Native American Tribal Leaders. I've talked to agents from US Fish and Wildlife. I've studied the Environmentally Endangered and Sensitive Habitats areas. I've ridden the Trains with my kids. This is an "advisory" committee. I feel with my background, strong ties with the surrounding neighborhoods, close affiliations with the nearby schools, and understanding of the ecology, I would be a good addition to this committee. I thank you for your consideration. I have a background in engineering and have performed transportation planning on many park projects so I am familiar with the high level of scrutiny that is necessary when implementing environmental changes. Especially with long term master planning, it is important to view a situation from all angles as to avoid unintended and potentially costly consequences. I have lived in Costa Mesa for 10 years and serve my community in a variety of capacities and donate much of my free time to local charities. Most recently I served honorably as a member of the Costa Mesa Charter Committee, collaborating with our 13 member panel to draft the historic document. I like to think I am a very logical and analytical person who truly cares about Costa Mesa and trust I would be a good fit for the Fairview Park Advisory Committee. I appreciate your consideration.
