Provide direction to staff.
DISCUSSION
In December of 2013, at the request of Mayor Pro Tem Mensinger, staff prepared the
attached memo summarizing the sign ordinances for freestanding signs for the
following cities: Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Tustin, Orange, Fountain Valley,
Santa Ana, and Costa Mesa.
The purpose of this memo is to obtain feedback from the City Council with regard to
amending the current sign code. Such changes could include, but are not necessarily
limited to, the following:
• Limit the number of freestanding signs allowed on a property;
• Establish a maximum square footage for freestanding signs;
• Reduce the height of freestanding signs (12 foot maximum height currently
allowed);
• Increase the landscaping requirement for new freestanding signs;
• Establish an amortization period for nonconforming freestanding signs; and
• Require that signs are in proportion to the size of the property.
