ORDINANCE NO -81-22
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
COSTA MESA REGARDING CONSOLIDATION OF THE GENERAL
MUNICIPAL ELECTION WITH THE STATEWIDE NOVEMBER
GENERAL ELECT'ION IN EVEN NUMBERED YEARS
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COSTA MESA DOES HEREBY ORDAIN AS

SECTION 1: The City Council of the City of Costa Mesa hereby finds
and declares as follows:
(a) The State Legislature recently adopted a law that now allows
general law cities to change the date of their municipal elections so
that the elections can occur'at the same time as certain statewide elections.
(b) It would be in the best interests of this city to take advantage
of this authority so as to increase voter participation at municipal elec-
tions and to reduce the costs for conducting elections.
ACCORDINGLY, the City Council of the City of Costa Mesa herewith
ordains as follows:
SECTION 2:
(a) The general municipal elections for the City of Costa Mesa
shall be held on the same day as the statewide general elections currently
held in November in even -numbered years.
(b) This ordinance is enacted pursuant to California Government Code
Section 36503.5 and does not become effective until the election day change
is approved by the Orange County Board of Supervisots.
(c) If the Board of Supervisors' approval is given prior to the
city's call of the April 1982 general municipal election, then that election
will be postponed and consolidated with the November 1982 general election.
If the approval comes after the call, then the election day change will be
effective for the general municipal election in 1984.
SECTION 3: This Ordinance shall take effect and be in full force
thirty (30) days from and after its passage, and prior to the expiration
of fifteen (15) days from the passage thereof, shall be published once in
the Orange Coast Daily Pilot, a newspaper of general circulation, printed
and published in the City of Costa Mesa,.or, in the alternative, the City
Clerk may cause to be published a summary of this Ordinance and a certified
copy of the text of this Ordinance shall be posted in the office of the
City Clerk five (5) days prior to the date of adoption of this Ordinance
and within fifteen (15) days after adoption the City Clerk shall cause to
be published, the aforementioned sunnary and shall post in the office of
the City Clerk a certified copy of this Ordinance together with the names
of the members of the City Council voting for and against the same.

regular meeting of said City Council held on the 2nd day of November, 1981,
and thereafter gassed and adopted as a whole at a regular meeting of said City
Council held on the 16th day of November, 1981, by the following roll call
vote:
